I have been promising to post more often……it starts now.

The plus side of work at home is you set your schedule.

The plus side of being retired is you have lots of time….

Right and wrong…….

Your own schedule…….means you have to do things that help your business move forward……..as much as you want ….when ever you want.

The trick….you have to do it. Any number of hours a day but stick to those hours. It can be one hour or ten hours. It is going to depend on your circumstances. Are you at it full time to make a living? Or are you at it part time to learn the business and grow it as you go?

Your choice. BUT…..which ever it is stay with your plan.

If you overwork yourself without seeing quick results you may lose interest.

First, realize that any business…….any business (that important) takes time.

So give it time. Learn the pieces. “Glue” them together and watch as the parts of your business start to come together.

OK…..retired. More time to do. The keyword is doing. There is plenty. For example, I do no yard work and the pool man cleans the pool. But I stay busy all day. I spend about ten hours a day at the computer. I am a growing artist. Soon there will be a site with my art work.

The point, I have the time and do what I want to do……..but always moving forward.

Enough of that, you get it.

Next, we talked about this before. Keep the garbage cleaned out of your email that wastes your time.

I mean those emails that are bait to steal you time. Like the ones from a “great friend of the marketer” that will send you another bait product, in exchange for your email address.

Now you will be getting more time stealers. Emails that have a secret but “I can’t tell you what it is unless you ad your name to my list”. Bait….Delete…..

Your time would be better spent fishing….(Gonna’ clean the boat this week and catch up on my fishing.)

And last for now…..

I get requests on a daily basis to use the content from this blog…..

Sure, nothing wrong with that.

I only ask one thing in return. (No, not to add your name to my list.)

Give me credit and link back to the blog. Seems fair. And thanks.

Thanks for visiting.

Hope it helps you a little….

Till next time,

Jim Gillum

Wow…A whole month since the last post…sorry I will try harder. I do have a lot to share and I will…

Anyway…work from home…unreal….Talk about freedom…

Right now I am writing this post in a motel in North Carolina…….be back in Florida tomorrow…

First a story …then a point…..

I just finished and posted to the web, a new website http://www.Strasburg-Sam.com

It is a site about a groundhog and a village in Ohio……

I mention about focus…stick to your task and follow through…..well, sometime the doctor does not follow his own advice…..and with good reason…..

Bog down…I have so much going on I was getting “bogged down”…I needed to clear the data banks…. (brain)……..A few of you know me personally and know that I am a multi-tasker…..

So I went ahead with this fun project……

I built the graphics, took the photos and wrote the content…….

As time goes by I will help you to do all of those things………

Now the point…….Do the things that you know how to do first…

The rest can be learned and will come in time……

Another point…

To do well on the web…or for that matter in any business, do something you know and like……

For example…I like to paint. I paint landscapes……acrylic on canvas….

Some say my work is pretty good……

I am days away from completing a site with some of my paintings for sale…..

Now to be fair, I can tell you to try the same kind of thing with your hobby…..and of course, along the line I will. More than once.

It is easier when you know how to do all those things necessary to make it all work…..

You can learn…I did…from zero.

OH…one more thing…I have had several work at home  off- line businesses….we will start talking about those and how you can integrate those with an internet business…

To you success,

Jim

Learning anything new can be interesting……

Learning to build your own home business can be even more interesting…..

Particularly when you are really digging into to your project and researching information. You have piles of books (maybe ebooks); notes everywhere and your eyes are beginning to glaze over.

Information Overload……..your mind gets …well, stuck……

Happens to everyone………..it may even damped your motivation and almost stop your forward progress.

Dedication to your goals is a wonderful thing. You can push yourself too far and too hard. Not good.

How to fix it?

Time to recharge your battery…………..

Get away for your home business work. At least give your mind a break.
If you have a hobby, work on it for awhile. But it must take concentration. You have to do something that requires all of your mental focus. No time to think about work.

Spend some effort concentrating on not concentrating on your business. It will work and work well.

Once you get the hang of it, you can recharge in a very short period of time.
OK…before you laugh try it.

It will work and comes with a bonus. The same focus that you learn to use on your “battery recharge”, will work on your business focus.

Bottom line……….
You will become more productive and…..you will feel less stress about your business…..

To your success,
Jim
p.s. It works for me and has worked for years………

Is that a strange question?

So is the answer…….yes and no…

It depends on the direction you pick for your business on the internet. Will you find a job doing “work”? Things like data entry, virtual assistant or maybe doing surveys, etc.

Or will you chose to offer a product or service…. You have to decide. Anything, other than the “Job” type activities, is going to fall in the catagory of “marketing”.

From reading through the forums, many people believe that internet marketing means the “make money ” niche. You know the one where the poor dumb guy makes thousands of dollars overnight by using some long hidden secret.

Let’s take a closer look.

If you are offering a product or service…you will have to sell it.

The system you use to sell is marketing……just that simple.

Now, an internet marketing system is a little more complicated than that. But, to be successful you need to develop a system.

The best way to develop a sound system, is to learn each of the parts and then put them all together. Not as hard as it may sound.

But back on track. If your business will be providing a service, such as freelance writing or graphic design, you will have to market that service.

If you focus on affiliate products or your own products, you will have to market them.

Therefore, if your decision is to market them on the internet. You are an internet marketer.

It is that basic. Once you learn the methods, you can market anything under the sun.

The best to you in your efforts……..I will try to help….

Jim Gillum

Well…I said it…….and it can be…..

There are just so many things to do in this “easy” business, that the days just go by. Faster then you realize, or faster than I realize.

My slow down has not been a slow down but, rather it has been a redo. By spending more time in the forums than I had originally planned, I discovered that much of my material was focused a little too high.

Seems as though there are more people, than I first believed, that need more basic foundation information.

For example, I read a post, by an admitted new markerter, who asks a pretty basic question. That’s what forums are for.

Then I read several answers that are so far off base it is just unreal. That tells me there is a hole in the information system or too many people are not taking the time to secure accurate information.

OK…back to the point, I have been doing some rewriting on my books and articles, to be sure that I get enough basics for a really new marketer.

It is worth the effort, I really do want to provide good solid information to my readers and subscribers.

An why, you might ask is it too easy? Because I have the time to review and review again, the information you will need….

My background includes investigation and research, lots of it, I want to know why things work so that I can pass it on to you.

A good strong foundation is essential to build a strong business. Regardless of your long term goals, extra income or long term business, you need to build it right.

I would like to help………

Well now ….time to get back to work….the holidays are over……

Finally got back from another trip to Ohio……this time it was cold……….suffered a massive computer crash….spilled a cup of water on the keyboard….took days to get it up and running again……

In the next few weeks I will concentrate on more work from home tips. I will have more postings because I would really like to provide some information to help with your business.

The past few weeks I have been spending a fair amount of time in this forum. They have some great information for all levels of experience.

I would encourage you to join it and you will pick up some good stuff.  http://www.v7n.com/forums  Also a word of caution, although most posts are closely monitered, be careful. Remember, there is no get rich quick with no work anywhere.

And some of the answers are from folks that really are trying but don’t have it yet…….Look before you leap……

In the very near future, I will have one of my new sites up and it will have a free article section. As that part grows it will contain a lot of basic help and get started information…..

Is it a lot of work for a mostly retired guy…..I like it….you stay young if you stay busy…..Working on three books and at least three sites….

Enough for now……..be back soon…

The best to you….

Jim Gillum

What is an expert?

That’s a guy who comes into town wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase.

He looks like he might know a few things and he does drive a high priced car…….

Back in the 70s we had a guy who was pimping a system called “Dare to be great”…..

He told his followers to do whatvever you have to but, buy a Cadilaac or a Lincoln and get a thousand dollar suit….

Makes you look like you are making big bucks……

Don’t know the rest of the scam…..supposed to make a lot of money….think he went to jail…..

That’s your expert……Had a good friend a few years ago….made millions…..was he an expert?……great guy….no…

His businesses were very successful because of him….he made the business…not the product….people liked him…they bought from him….

His products were good and he ran a good operation….knew how to make a profit and still treat his customers right….

Could we do that?? …probably not …because his customers liked him and trusted him…he was the business….

When these so called experts want your money to show you how to get rich….just say NO…..

You build a business by learning all the pieces that build your business…

That does not mean that you have to do it all yourself…….you can hire some folks to do the things that are too hard for you to learn…..

You do have to learn enough to keep from getting ripped off….

I look at several forums on a regular basis. Some of the answers to questions just scare the bazoo out of me…..They have no idea about the subject and the suggestions are just unbelievable….

And why do I not correct those?….Don’t want to get labeled as a trouble maker……Besides got some good backlinks working….

Think about it……….if you send me a bucket of bucks….are you going to get rich?…….

Hmmm…probaly not…..

Then why do you want to send the dollars to some guy who is carring a briefcase?….

Spent a little time this past week prowling the IM forums. I have a couple of products that I am working on and I just wanted to be sure that I am on the right track. I am. You can always find some interesting comments, questions and some very unique answers.

For example, many new marketers are asking some pretty basic questions. And some will tell you in their introduction that they are new and want to learn how to get a business going.  I think that is great. Nothing like starting your own business. Either to work at making some extra money or headed toward developing a full time income.

Well, you might ask, “Jim do you encourage other people to get into IM? Isn’t that competition”?

No, not really……There is more than enough business to go around. There are so many different products available you don’t want to try to count them.

I responded to one post from someone who wanted to enter the IM information niche.  I encouraged them to read, study and learn what it is all about. Another forum member jumped all over me claiming that it is a very competitive and difficult niche.

Of course I responded rather strongly that people have a right to try something without being criticized just because it is hard. But then again, if everything was easy, everyone would be doing it.

Two points……..you can do anything that you believe you can….if you are willing to put in the work. Don’t let people discourage you. Always work on learning the basics first……the rest will come in time. And it will all start fitting together.

Second point…..if you visit the forums, be cautious of the people that answer your questions by offering to sell a great program. That is one of the problems with many programs available today. They do not give you enough information to move forward and develop your own business.

Fill in the blanks is fine. If it does not work out for you, you will not have the necessary tools to move into another niche or product, without buying another program. And then maybe another……

Learning the how is good……learning the why is great…….

Best wishes on moving forward…….

There has been a ton of chatter on the net about the new Federal Trade Commission rules that go into effect December 1,2009.

Take the time and go to the FTC site and spend some time reading the changes. It may well be worth your time. I for one am glad to see some sanity brought to web marketing. For some of you new people, it has to scramble your mind when you read about those folks who know nothing, do nothing and collect massive amounts of money.

I hope you haven’t spent any money on those too good too be true deals.

In real life some of those unbelievable things do happen. Somebody wins the lottery. Somebody shoots a hole in one at golf. Somebody catches the world record fish. But not everybody and not everyday.

I know people who have done all of those things. Except for the fish. I had him on the line and the line broke.

Most business success is accomplished by hard work and patience.  Internet marketing takes time to learn, time to develop and time to generate income. It is mostly dependent on you. And that’s a good thing. If you learn the business and apply what you learn, the success is yours.

The FTC can help level the playing field for the small and upstart marketers. Some marketers may decide it is time to seek other forms of income. Maybe hedge funds or mortgages.

I strongly believe that when you play by the rules, you are better off in the long run.

It is hard to remember a lie………BUT the truth is always the truth….

If you insist on throwing away money, let me know. I’ll give you an address where you can send it with the same zero results.

One of us might as well have some spending cash……….

Best wishes with your business…….

Quite a number of marketers recommend forum posts to secure backlinks to help in web rankings, especially with Google.

Sure why not?  Seems to have  a positive effect. And you can also find some useful information. I do it. Sometimes it is fun.

As you get to know me you will learn that I have spend many years studying people.  Not from the academic point of view, I am not “Dr. Jim”.

From the response and reaction point of view. From years of sales, marketing, politics, management and finally investigation.

Every business that I have ever been in, has to do with direct contact with people.  I have learned to be objective in my assessment of statements made by all levels of experience.  I’m not going to tell you that I am some kind of psychic or wizard. I will tell you that I have a better than average BS meter.

I also have very high sales resistance. To my point.

Join a forum or two related to your niche. You can find them by searching Google. Just “your niche forums” will bring up more than you need.

Read some of the posts. Some of the larger forums have thousands of members and hundreds of subjects. Some of the threads are very entertaining and intended for fun. You should have some fun. All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. Relax once in a while.

Then, since we are talking about marketing, look through some of the business related threads. They have every thing form how to start a business to how to code software.

You can get a better feel for where your knowledge level stands in relation to IM. Some of the posts will make you feel good. Some will leave you scratching your head.

Be careful about following advise that don’t make sense. And watch for the folks that offer a solution by referring you to thier products.  That is not to say that the products are bad. I do think that when you offer to answer questions, the answer should be an answer and not a “buy me”

Saw one poster that asked questions like “Do you know how to make money with IM?” Then answered with go to my site. There were about a dozen of those from the same member. Most forums will not allow that type of marketing. That type of marketing does not work with marketers.

After a while you leaqrn that there is no get rich quick that really works. For you. It works for the seller.

Anyway, take some time and look a few over. You can pick up some good information. AND maybe get a few backlinks.
